a handy way to get historic census data

this interface might be easier to use than the Census Bureau's
select your datasets, then wait for them to be generated
datasets are always for the entire US
there is generally less data for historic data (this is 1910)
dot density maps
if you want to follow along, try using this data
sometimes choropleths flatten data too much

a good dot density map can show more nuance

how?
you need polygons and a column of numeric data
tell QGIS how many points to make
sometimes this will be the value in the column itself
sometimes you will want to do some math (eg divide by 100)
keep in mind that you will have a new shapefile with the points you create
style in a way that works for the scale you're displaying at
